Today's EL lesson on PLANTS

We had an interesting lesson today right? I am indeed proud of you and happy with your behaviour today as you have displayed great self-discipline and have explained to me what we have learnt today.

Wow, the 'Magic School Bus' VCD on Seeds was really educational. We have learnt other important terms associated with Plants... Do you remember these terms....
  • Nectar - the sweet sticky liquid found in flowers
  • Proboscis Tube - The tube which an insect uses to suck the nectar
  • Anther - the long tube which sticks out of the flower which has the pollen
  • Pollen - the microsopic grain needed for a seed to be formed
  • Pollen Tube - the tube where the pollens travel to and settle at the bottom of the flower to meet the egg and form the seed

We have also learnt why insects are very important for a plant to reproduce and how seeds get to travel to other places to form new plants.

Just to inform you all these words will NOT be tested in your exams....so don't get tensed up. But I would love to share more knowledge with you. You will be learning about them in detail in upper primary....

So what do you think of today's lesson!! Send me your comments!!

As a bonus..here's something for you to watch to excite you. In the Magic School Bus, Ms Fritzle shrinks the kids right? In 1989(I was in Pri 6 then), there was actually a movie entitled "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids", where this wacky scientist invents a machine which could really shrink people. The kids in the movie become smaller than insects and have a wild adventure. I have attached the trailer....try to rent this movie and watch it if you can!!! They also have adventures in the garden and have close encounters with insects!

Essays on Singapore

Sometime in Term 2, I approached Cheryl and Kaiwen completed an essay on Singapore.
I thought since Racial Harmony Day and National Day are coming, It would be appropriate to share them with all of you.

“WHAT MAKES SINGAPORE, SINGAPORE?”

Singapore is my homeland and I am proud to be living in it. I have been to neighbouring countries like Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand, and none of the countries makes me feel more at home and at ease than Singapore.

Singapore has a clean environment. Every neighbourhood has dedicated cleaners who help to maintain the cleanliness of each neighbourhood. You can be fined for littering, spitting or urinating in the public and this deters offenders to a great extent.

Singapore is a very small country. It looks like a little speck on the map but I have read that Singapore owns the best airport in the world. Although it is small, its people are of many different races such as Chinese, Malay and Indian and these people are able to live together in harmony with one another.

In Singapore, we are living in a pretty safe environment. You can often see police cars patrolling around the neighbourhoods and police posts are mostly available in each neighbourhood. As compared to other countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia, Singapore’s crime rate is considerably low. However, low crime does not mean no crime. When holidaying in neighbourhood countries, my parents would warn me to stay close as they have read in the newspapers about the many cases of robberies and kidnapping happening in those countries.

Singapore is often referred to as a “Garden City”. Trees and plants are neatly lined along the roads and expressways. This makes Singapore looks less like a concrete jungle. There are also many big and beautiful parks in Singapore such as Mac Ritchie, East Coast and Pasir Ris. During the weekends, my family and I love to visit these parks as there are many different activities we could do there, for example, cycling, skating and picnicking. Most importantly, these parks are very safe.

The common language used in Singapore is English and Mandarin. Even the old folks I meet in the coffee shops are able to speak Mandarin. Tourists coming to Singapore find it easy to communicate with Singaporeans. The road signs are also in English and so tourists would not face any difficulties reading them and finding their way around Singapore.

Transportation in Singapore is also very convenient and cheap. Public transport includes taxis, buses and Mrts and they are very regular and efficient. Taking buses and Mrts are also made very easy as bus stops and Mrt stations are available everywhere. I can see in Malaysia that public transport is a hassle and hence each household cannot do without a car.

Singapore is also a food and shopping paradise. There are many different varieties of food, from different countries, that you can easily find in Singapore. I do not have to travel to Japan to enjoy my favourite sashimi. Korean, Italian and Thai food are also available in almost every part of Singapore. Besides, there are many big shopping malls in Singapore and many imported products are also made available here.

There is no four seasons in Singapore, although sometimes I have wished otherwise. Singapore is usually hot and sunny except during the rainy seasons. Above all, Singapore is free from natural disasters such as snowstorms and earthquakes, which can result in many people made homeless. People living in countries such as Indonesia and Philippines are not as fortunate as we Singaporeans.

In Singapore, the poverty rate is rather low. Most of the people in Singapore do something to make a living, even some old folks selling tissue papers in the hawker centres. Sometimes, I even come across handicaps selling their own handicrafts. Most people living in Singapore own at least a flat. I do not often see beggars or homeless people along the streets, unlike poor countries like Indonesia.

These are only some of the factors that make Singapore unique in its own way and I am glad to be born, educated and raised in this country that makes me proud.

"Your Singapore Through Their Eyes"

Twinkle Twinkle little stars, how I wonder what you are,

In my eyes, our five stars symbolize,

1/ “Tuan Jie Yi Xin” 团结一心(星) -United and Harmony
Singapore as a multi- cultural nation, we have Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian. We are just like a Big Family, live with respect, peace and harmony.

2/ “Xin Xin” 信心(星) -Confidence and Faith
Singapore is a very small country with limited resources and only 4.6 million population. We must have confidence to prove and show ourselves being competitive among the world. “SIA” have proven the nation proud.

3/ “ Chuang Xin” 创新(星) -Innovative and Creativity
In this I.T generation; we need modern economy drives by innovation and creativity. We have “Creative Technology” that outshine in the world.

We also have delicious cuisine of all races and ”Singlish” that blends in well among the different races languages in Singapore.

4/ “ Heng Xin” 恒心(星) -perseverance and persistence
As a “Garden City”, we get this far with perseverance and persistency, striving from good, better to best. We keep our country organized, clean and a safe place to live.

5/ “Ming Xing” 明星 -Star
Be a Star that shines brightly with pride and dignity

Twinkle, Twinkle little star, now I know what you are!

All of us have successfully entered into the portal. Only Bimei is unable to. Mrs Soh has been alerted and she will follow up with this. We have learnt how to access the Class Forum and how to send a reply. Well, it went well I should say. In future we will be using this key feature to do our online journal. Exciting rite???

In our next computer lesson, we will be learning how to download an online assignment, complete it, save it and then reload and send it back to me. Complicated right? Well, we will learn how to do it soon. So have fun exploring our portal.
